Default Scanners Definitions
The Scanners page displays a collection of pre-configured scanners:
Each scanner is optimized for current market dynamics and aligns with MomentumDetector’s trading methodology. While these default scanners’ settings cannot be modified, you have the option to create custom ones.
Clicking any scanner launches it in a floating window, enabling simultaneous display of multiple scanners:
Access scanner configuration by clicking the settings icon (indicated by red arrow on the image above). Remember that default scanner settings are locked and cannot be modified.
Two types of scanners
Alerts type: Day Highs / Lows
Scans market-wide for stocks hitting new daily highs or lows, with additional filtering criteria.
Alert scanners utilize distinct thresholds for four key market phases: pre-market, Open, Regular Trading Hours (RTH), and After-Hours. This exclusive MomentumDetector feature recognizes that trading dynamics shift significantly across these periods, optimizing day high / lows detection parameters accordingly.
Lists type : Top Gainers / Losers
Tracks top 30 stocks with largest percentage gains/losses, updating every minute. Includes supplementary metrics for refined analysis.

Listed stocks
Day Highs - Stocks: Low Float stocks making new day highs
This scanner offers exceptional potential for identifying high-momentum stocks experiencing rapid price acceleration. Recommended starting point for new users.
Day Lows - Stocks: Low Float stocks making new day lows
Similar configuration to Day Highs scanner but tracks stocks making new daily lows. Lower utility for momentum trading as exploding downside moves are less common.
Top Gainers - Stocks: Top Gappers and Gainers: Smart version
Smart stock scanner that lists and displays high-potential gappers and gainers throughout the trading day.
Unlike traditional top gainers lists, this smart scanner implements filtering to surface higher quality trading candidates:
- Pre-Market: Displays top percentage movers relative to previous day’s CLOSE.
- Regular Market Hours: Automatically switches to show top gainers from market OPEN.
- Momentum: Excludes low-activity stocks with no trades in the last minute.
- Volume: Requires minimum daily trading volume thresholds.
- Price: Minimum $1 share price to exclude penny stocks crap.
This combination helps identify the most promising gainers for the day.
Pro Tips: 1. Keep an eye on the trades per seconds data on the scanner board. Stocks with little trades per seconds are sleeping and usually less noteworthy and vice versa. 2. Look for “HOD” (High of the day) badges, as top gainers making new highs suggest particularly strong bullish conditions. “HOD” badge will only show up during RTH period.
The smart list scanner in the above image displays today’s top gaining stocks. The blue circle arround the “HOD” badge indicates a stock reaching its High Of Day. Looking at trades per second (TPS) data circled in green: “PULM” and “UAVS” show strong activity with 30 TPS, while “GORV” displays minimal activity at just 0.2 TPS. Stocks with higher TPS, like PULM and UAVS, warrant attention since they combine both price gains and active trading. Conversely, GORV’s low TPS suggests it’s currently dormant despite being among the top gainers. Using our smart scanner list, you will soon develop a habit of eyeballing the list for stocks with strong activity levels as denoted by trades per second data on a dark blue background.
Top Losers - Stocks: Worse Gappers and Losers: Smart version
The settings and purpose are similar to the Top Gappers and Gainers: Smart version, but this scanner tracks the top 30 losers of the day.
Top Gainers / losers - Stocks: Traditional unfiltered version
These are traditional top gainers and losers lists found on most trading platforms. Unlike the smart top gainers lists described above, they are not pre-filtered for quality and may include lower-quality stocks like penny stocks or those with zero trades per second in the last minute. We recommend using the smart version of the top gainers and losers lists.
OTC default scanners
Default scanners for OTC stocks are similar to the listed stocks scanners but with adjusted settings to accommodate OTC market dynamics. OTC stocks are typically less liquid and more volatile than listed stocks, requiring distinct scanning parameters.
